PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition which can be applied to a large-sized screen with the power consumption reduced in the practical temperature area and largely improved in unevenness on display screen by dissolving the problems on increased power consumption and unevenness in displaying caused as a result in the excessive spontaneous polarization of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal substance or its composition in the temperature range in which the liquid crystal substance or its composition develops an antiferroelectric liquid crystal phase. ;SOLUTION: This composition has the phase transition point(Tp) of 50°C≤Tp≤120°C from the antiferroelectric liquid crystal phase to the ferroelectric (or the liquid crystal phase on a further higher temperature side including the smectic A phase) in a temperature-increasing procedure, and a value of the spontaneous polarization(SP) of 10nC/cm2≤SP≤150nC/cm2 at 30°C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
