PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for removing the nitrate nitrogen in waste water capable of easily dealing with a change in temperature and flow rate.;SOLUTION: The nitrate nitrogen treatment apparatus having a preliminary vessel 12 which is provided with temperature control means 11 and into which the waste water containing the nitrate nitrogen is introduced, and a waste water treating vessel 1 into which the waste water regulated to a prescribed temperature in the preliminary vessel is admitted and inorganic materials 10 for denitrification consisting of sulfur- and calcium-based component for removing the nitrate nitrogen are packed. The method for treating the nitrate nitrogen in the waste water comprising removing the nitrate nitrogen in the waste water by regulating the temperature of the waste water introduced into the preliminary vessel to a respective temperature range adequate for the growth of the denitrifying microorganisms living in or around the inorganic materials for denitrification between 10 to 50°C when the temperature of the waste water ranges out of prescribed temperature, then introducing the waste water regulated to the prescribed temperature range into the waste water treating vessel in subjecting the waste water to the treatment with the nitrate nitrogen treatment apparatus.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
