PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing a large amount of a neutral aqueous solution of chitosan using an inexpensive common chitosan and useful for the production of e.g. a food packaging material, a medical packaging material and an antibacterial sheet effective for suppressing the proliferation of bacterial in a drip liquid separated and flowed out from meat, fish, etc., and keeping the freshness of foods over a long period. PSOLUTION: The invention provides a method for the production of an aqueous solution of chitosan by dissolving a chitosan in an aqueous solution of an acid and neutralizing the obtained chitosanic acid solution, an antibacterial coating agent containing the chitosan aqueous solution produced by the above method and an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of a synthetic resin, and an antibacterial sheet or film produced by coating a substrate sheet of film with the antibacterial coating agent.
