PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify the cause of the light power fluctuation of a WDM signal with a simple structure by monitoring the transmission state of an optical transmission line while comparing the fluctuation quantities of light power of a plurality of kinds of light whose light components that are mutually included are different about two wavelength bands. ;SOLUTION: Optical branching elements 311 and 312 respectively include, e.g. and a fiber coupler, etc., and separate a part of light in a signal light wavelength band including 8-wave signal lights (λ1 to λ8) propagated in an optical fiber transmission line 42. An optical detector 313 detects the light power of light that is separated by the element 311 and further made to pass through the element 312. An optical detector 315 detects the light power of light that is separated by the element 312 and further made to pass through an optical fiber grating 314. A monitoring part 316 inputs data about the light power that is respectively detected by the detectors 313 and 315 and monitors a transmission state in a signal light wavelength band on the basis of the comparison results of the fluctuation quantity of each light power per unit time.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
