PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkali storage battery which has adequate service capacity even when discharged in a large electric current, by means of improving a hydrogen absorbing alloy for hydrogen absorbing alloy electrodes, has a high-rate discharge property, and has a strong output power. SOLUTION: The hydrogen absorbing alloy for electrodes comprises hydrogen absorbing alloy particles having the surface layer in which the nickel concentration increases in the direction toward the surface from the inner part, thereon. An electrode 2 of the hydrogen absorbing alloy is prepared from the above hydrogen absorbing alloy and used for a negative electrode 2 of the alkali storage battery.
