PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make precisely detectable surface defects in metal plates including stainless steel plates, different in surface finishing by types, without complicating the judging treatment of flaws even if using an inexpensive light source such as a high frequency fluorescent lamp. ;SOLUTION: In this defect detecting method, the amount of offset (x) between the light receiving axis P2 of a light receiving part 5 and the regular reflection axis P1 of a reflected light is adjusted corresponding to the glossiness to prevent a regularly reflected light from directly hitting the light receiving part 5 for a specularly finished material with a great regular reflection amount of a light and to restrict the dispersion of detection signals for a metal plate with the gloomy surface of less regular reflection amount and greater irregular reflection amount which is so placed that a regularly reflected light is in turn sufficiently received in inspection.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
