PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low nonlinearity single mode optical fiber which has a sufficiently large effective cross section and a sufficiently low dispersion slope.;SOLUTION: The core part of the optical fiber is formed with four refractive index layers which are laminated in the form of rings from the center to the radial direction and the relations among average refractive indices n1, n2, n3 and n4 of respective refractive index layers and the average refractive index n0 of the clad layer are n1n2, n2n3, n3n4 and n4n0, and n1n0, n2≥n0 and n3n0. Thus, the effective cross section is made large, the dispersion slope is made sufficiently small and a multiplex wavelength transmission system having a large number of multiplexed wavelengths is realized.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
