PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a color LBP capable of color multilevel printing in which a variety of office uses can be dealt with by making possible to perform high resolution color binary printing at a higher speed with a specified quality, and resolution is prevented from lowering in toner saving print by utilizing the function at a multilevel print section. SOLUTION: A color LBP capable of color multilevel printing is provided with a smoothing circuit for color binary printing, a video clock circuit, and a laser drive circuit so that printing can be performed in a plurality of print modes. At a host, image data in print data from an application is converted into bit map data corresponding to a print mode and transferred to a printer along with print mode information. In the printer, code data is developed into bit map data depending on the print mode information. Developed data is processed in one of a plurality of processing routes in order to perform ON/OFF control of laser beam. The number of dots per inch is set higher at the time of color binary printing than at the time of color multilevel printing.
