PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically add semantic information to words, which are registered in a word dictionary, by the system itself without using syntactic analysis. SOLUTION: A system for estimating semantic information has a word dictionary 13, in which notation of words is associated with their semantic information and they are stored, and a semantic estimation means, which estimates meaning of each of the words by comparing them contained in the word dictionary 13 based on the common character sequence of each of them in notation. In addition, the system has a semantic information containing means, in which meaning that is estimated using the semantic estimation means is associated with notation of each of the words as semantic information of each of them to be contained in the word dictionary 13. The common character sequence of words has high possibility of expressing a common concept, so that meaning may be easily added to the words. Therefore, words registered in the word dictionary 13 are automatically added with their meanings by the system itself without using syntactic analysis.
