PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of clearly observing suspended particulate matter in an atmosphere with a microscope without being affected by backgrounds, accurately measuring the amount of the suspended particulate matter in the atmosphere, and accurately identifying chemical substances contained in the suspended particulate matter in the atmosphere.;SOLUTION: By electrostatically charging the suspended particulate matter P in the atmosphere with single-pole ions generated by a discharge electrode 3 and catching the suspended particulate matter P, electrostatically charged through the use of a potential difference with the discharge electrode 3, on a dust collecting electrode 4 made of a solid having continuous surfaces, it is possible to singly catch the suspended particulate matter P on a plane, eliminate the effects of backgrounds at observation by a microscope, eliminate errors due to the absorption of moisture at weight measurement before and after the catching, and enable the action of electromagnetic waves singly on the particulates P.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
