PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a working face stabilization method for shield TUNNEL ING method and a working face retaining muddy water allowing a stable excavation work by satisfactorily retaining a working face.;SOLUTION: In this working face retaining muddy water 4, fine particle contents contained in the ground 2 under excavation is mixed to bentonite and an acrylamide-based polymer coagulant with a specific gravity of 1-1.5 and a funnel coefficient of 60 seconds or less. The working face retaining muddy water 4 containing such materials is penetrated among particles in the ground 2 without forming a muddy film on the working face, but its penetration area 1 is limited. It is determined by the penetration resistance generated in the penetration of the muddy water 4 to among the particles in the ground 2 and the muddy water pressure of the muddy water 4.
