PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame retarder for a thermoplastic resin of which the flame retardance can be improved without impairing physical properties that the thermoplastic resin has inherently and a flame-retardant thermoplastic resin.;SOLUTION: This flame retarder for a thermoplastic resin is composed of a metal salt of a sulfonic acid of a styrene-based polymer and the content of a metal sulfate is 5 mass % or below. The flame-retardant thermoplastic resin contains the above flame retarder. A desirable flame retarder for a polycarbonate resin is a metal salt of a sulfonic acid of a styrene-based polymer of which 15-45 mol % of the total monomer units is an aromatic monomer unit having a sulfonic acid group on the aromatic skeleton and the content of a metal sulfate is 5 mass % or below.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
