PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To respond to the demands of therapeutic medicines, preventive medicines and diagnostic medicines against malignant tumors, such as stomach cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostatic cancer, and diseases such as diabetes, cell death inhibitors on the ischemia of brains, hearts, and the like, protective medicines from the death of normal cells on treatments using anti-cancer medicines or radiations, or medicines for reinforcing the effects of the existing medicines. SOLUTION: This invention provides a new polypeptide having an activity for inhibiting cell death, a DNA encoding the polypeptide, an antibody recognizing the polypeptide, a substance to be bound to the polypeptide, a substance inhibiting the specific binding of the polypeptide to the substance to be bound to the polypeptide, a substance controlling the expression of a cell death- inhibiting gene encoding the polypeptide, a method for screening the substance, an animal in which the cell death-inhibiting gene is defected or partially modified, and their useful uses.
