PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium having margin spaces for defect management and a method of allocating the margin spaces. ;SOLUTION: The margin spaces can be further flexibly and efficiently allocated by forming a plurality of regions to one group even if the relations between the regions and the groups are not previously regulated, dividing the allocation of the margin spaces to the margin spaces for slip replacement and linear replacement, previously allocating the margin spaces for the slip replacement, allocating the margin spaces for the linear replacement according to the sizes of the margin spaces for the slip replacement remaining after being used and the applications of disks and allocating the additional margin spaces for the linear replacement from the last of the theoretical file spaces if there are no sufficient margin spaces for the linear replacement under use.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
