An encoder encodes a stream of date-bits of a binary source signal into a stream of date-bits of a binary channel signal, wherein the bitstream of the source signal is divided into n-bit source words. The encoder includes a converter for converting the source words into corresponding m-bit channel words. The converter converts n-bit source words into corresponding m-bit channel words, such that the conversion for each n-bit source word is parity inverting. The relations hold that mn1, p1, and that p is an odd integer that can vary. Preferably, mn1. A decoder decodes the channel signal, obtained by means of the encoder, to reproduce the source signal.
