New gamma-cyclodextrin ether derivs. - used as inclusion complexes esp. for pharmaceutical cpds.

A gamma-cyclodextrin ether or mixed ether is new where the ether substituents are 1-6C alkyl, hydroxy 1-6C alkyl, carboxy 1-6C alkyl or (1-6C alkoxycarbonyl) 1-6C alkyl. Prefd. substituents are methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl, hydroxybutyl, carboxymethyl and carboxyethyl. The deg. of substitution is pref. 0.125-3 and the molar substitution is pref. 0.125-10. - The cpds. are prepd. by reacting gamma-cyclodextrin of formula (I) with an O-alkylating agent. Reaction is pref. in an inert solvent in the presence of a base at 30-200 deg. C.
