The icebreaking ship has icebreaking cutters (30) protruding from the sides (21,22) and preferably forming the widest part of the underwater portion. The cutters are swung or thrust sideways so as to vary the overall hull width. The outer edges (31) of the cutters can be sharp, radiused or chamfered., and they can be extended from or retracted into openings in the hull by hydraulic rams or other means, being flush with the hull when retracted.
