The method of the present invention provides for multistage transmutation of long-lived radioisotopes in radioactive waste, each step having different neutron spectrum and neutron flux characteristics, and with a suitable variation, can enhance transmutation efficiency and improve storage conditions. The multi-regional transmutation device according to the invention is suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention. Two embodiments are a multi-regional salt melt atomic reactor and an accelerator-driven multi-region salt melt sub-critical system. The structure of the devices is shown in Figures 10 and 11. Each region (1, 2, 3), as part of an isolated autonomous circulating circuit, provides separate regional radiation. Circulation circuits include an expansion vessel (5, 16, 27), heat exchangers (9, 20) and circulating pumps (10, 21). The accelerator particle bundle (45) may be a proton or electron beam.
