Separation of hydrogen fluoride (HF) from 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (I) is effected by extraction with an organic solvent containing at least one chloro- and/or fluorobutane derivative (II). Separation of HF from 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (I) is effected by extraction with an organic solvent containing at least one compound of formula (II): CCl aF 3 - aCH 2CCl bF 2 - bCH 3 (II) a : 0-3; b : 0-2; a+b : 1 or more. An independent claim is also included for a process for producing (I) by hydrofluorination of (II), in which (II) used as an extraction solvent for separating HF from (I) is introduced into a (I)-producing reactor.
