A method for setting up a communication parameter for data communication between a first primary modem and a second primary modem through first and second secondary modems

A method for setting up data communication parameters for data communication between a calling modem (M1) and an answering modem (M2) through first and second gateway modems (G1,G2) of a packet network. The method permits the data communication to be set up between the calling modem (M1) and the answering modem (M2) through the gateway modems (G1,G2) as an end to end communication between the calling and answering modems (M1,M2) where by the data is compressed only once in the end to end communication by either the calling modem or the answering modem, depending on the direction of communication, and is decompressed only once in either the calling or answering modems (M1,M2). The method comprises the steps of setting the calling modem (M1) to initially relay its preferred data compression parameters to the first gateway modem G1), setting the second gateway modem (G2) to relay default data compression parameters to the answering modem (M2) if handshaking has been completed between the second gateway modem and the answering modem (M2) simultaneously with or before handshaking is established between the calling modem (M1) and the first gateway modem (G1), and establishing the optimum data compression parameters for data communication based on the preferred data compression parameters of the calling and answering modems (M1,M2) if the calling or answering modem of the calling and first gateway modem pair and the answering and second gateway modem pair first to complete handshaking permits a deferral to occur in establishing the data compression parameters, or if both the calling and answering modems permit and deferral in the event of handshaking being simultaneously established between the calling and first gateway modem pair and the answering and second gateway modem pair so that end to end communication between the calling and answering modems in the optimum data compression parameters is established through the first and second gateway modems, otherwise, end to end communication in default data compression parameters is established between the calling and answering modems.
