The presnt invention concerns a starter for a motor vehicle comprising a starting drive mechanism (12) and a pinion gear (1), an electric motor (M) provided with a shaft (101) which can drive the shaft (100) of a starting drive mechanism, an electromagnetic contactor extending in a parallel manner with respect to the electric motor (M) above said motor and comprising a moveable core (2d), a fork (13) which is hingedly mounted on the upper end thereof to said moveable core (2b), the driver (12) comprising a groove for receiving the lower end of the fork (13), said groove being defined by two flanks (121,122) while the starting drive mechanism is rotationally fixed by cooperating means between the fork (13) and the driver (12) so that it can pass from the rest position to an engaged position with the flywheel ring gear.
