The system comprises a motor aggregate (1), a hydraulic transmission driven by the aggregate and a mechanical transmission system. The hydraulic transmission comprises a hydraulic force system or a part of such a system already installed in the boat, at least one hydraulic pump (e.g. load sensing pump (LSP)) mounted on the power take-off (PTO) drive for the aggregate, at least one hydraulic motor (9) mounted on a disconnectable coupling (6) in the mechanical transmission system for connecting the latter to the hydraulic transmission, and a control system for the hydraulic transmission, optionally operated by remote control. The mechanical transmission system comprises an indirect transmission between the disconnectable coupling and propeller shaft (3) which exerts a radial load upon the latter, and a foundation for mounting the disconnectable coupling. Independent claims are also included for (a) an installation method for the system and (b) a boat fitted with this system.
