The device is for filling a container (2) with a bag taken from a store of bags (3) supported on bearer pins (4). An engagement mechanism (5) takes the form of suction cups or suction mouths for application of vacuum to the bags. When the bag is taken from the store the remaining bags are pushed forward by an appropriate component (6). When a bag is gripped by the corresponding mechanism a first side of it is loosened from the bearer pins so that it opens. The second side of the bag is not simultaneously loosened from the support pins since no force is applied to it by the engaging mechanism. This creates the possibility for engagement pins (7) to move downwards and partly insert in the opened bag. For process monitoring, a platform is provided (8) on which an operator (9) can stand.
