Use, as paper-making additive different from the standard mass additive, or as water treatment additive, of composition containing at least one cationic starch component, and having fixed nitrogen content up to 2 (preferably 0.1-1.9) wt.% (dry wt.) and viscosity, determined by A test, up to 1600 (preferably 5-1500) mPa.s. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of cationic starch matter, with fixed nitrogen level up to 2% and average molecular wt. below 10power7 daltons, in preparation of starch composition used as claimed; (2) starch composition containing at least one cationic starch matter and having fixed nitrogen content 0.5-1.5 wt.% (dry wt.) and viscosity 10-800 mPa.s; and (3) use of composition (2) as paper-making additive or as additive to process of industrial water treatment.
