A method of testing milk flow for mastitis, including the steps of: (a) Diverting a sample from milk flow; (b) Automatically testing the diverting sample flow by measuring an attribute of any somatic cells in at least part of the milk of that sample; and (c) Wherein the measuring is by reference to a gelling characteristic of the milk under the action of a anionic detergent; and (d) Wherein the measuring is by reliance upon the viscosity of at least part of the milk of that sample when in a predetermined admixture for a predetermined time with an appropriate predetermined anionic detergent.
