Described is a vascular endothelial growth factor, herein designated VEGF-X, in addition to the nucleic acid molecule encoding it, an isolated host cell transformed with a vector containing the nucleic acid molecule and compounds that inhibit or enhance angiogenesis. Also provided is the sequence of a CUB domain, a widespread module in developmentally regulated proteins, present in the sequence of VEGF-X, the domain of which domain prevents angiogenesis and is used to treat diseases associated with inappropriate vascularisation or angiogenesis.
