A method for whitening teeth comprises: a) first applying to the teeth an aqueous rinse composition having an alkaline pH of 8.0 to 10.5 and b) thereafter immediately brushing the teeth to which the rinse has been previously applied with a peroxide dentifrice composition to effect whitening of the teeth. The peroxide can be urea peroxide and the dentifrice composition can further comprises an abrasive.
