Gate control apparatus for flood irrigation system and method of irrigation thereof

An irrigation gate control apparatus comprising: an arm arranged to be pivotally mounted in front of an irrigation gate, a first portion of the arm on one side of the pivot carrying a float having an aperture in or adjacent the base thereof, and a second portion of the arm on the opposite side of the pivot carrying a catch; a catch engagement means securable to the gate, the arm, catch and catch engagement means being located and arranged such that when the float is raised relative to the base of the irrigation race, the catch is engaged by the engagement means and holds the gate in the down or closed position; and when the float is lowered, the catch is disengaged from the catch engagement means, and the gate is released from the closed position. A method of irrigation using a flood irrigation system from a main supply race to a subsidiary irrigation race is also disclosed.
