The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for calibrating a sensor system by using the Fast Kalman Filtering. The calibration apparatus includes a logical unit (1) for receiving uncalibrated detecting signals from a centralized sensor system (3), as well as for reading/writing data from/to a database unit (2) containing the updating information on all the aspects related to the monitoring and the performance of the sensors, said information being brought to all control input ports (4) of the calibration apparatus for monitoring the sensor system (3). The logical unit (1) can provide, based on said information, a real-time or near real-time optimal sensor calibration at all the output ports (5) of the apparatus, by using the Fast Kalman Filtering (FKF) method, in case the stability conditions of the standard Kalman Filtering are met by the sensor system (3)
