The flush button operates a discharge valve and a float (10) mounted on a float bar (6). The button is also connected to a piston (4) which can be moved in an axial direction inside a cylinder (5) fixed inside the flush cistern (2). The piston is provided with a one-way valve (8) and the cylinder has a hole (5) extending through its base which can be closed by a seal (6) on the float bar. An Independent claim is also included for a method for flushing a toilet using this mechanism.
