The strand feed system at a braiding or gimping machine has a passage guide with a passage opening (24) to give a free space over the inner supply bobbin (15), formed by a ring-shaped entry (E) and a funnel-shaped outlet (A). A deflection roller (21) is at the entry (E), with a guide bush (22), and the filament guide eyelet at the outlet (A) is a guide bush (28). The outer strand moves in a straight line between the two guide bushes (22,28) on an extended path (a-b-c) between the braiding point (F) and the deflection roller (21). The dia. of the entry (E) is 45-55% of the outer dia. of the passage guide. The opening angle (alpha) of the outlet (A) is 45-65degrees and pref. 55degrees. The outlet bush (28) is held at an arm (27), parallel to the axis (B-B) of the passage guide in the take-off direction, extending into the opened zone of the outlet (A). The deflection roller (21) and its guide bush (22) are in alignment with the open zone of the entry (E). At least two guide rollers (4) are at the deflection roller (21). Both guide bushes (22,28) are of a wear-resistant material, and pref. ceramic.
