The purification of particle-laden gases is carried out in a cyclone (2). The gas is fed in through an inlet (1) and purified gas is removed through an outlet (3) which protrudes partially into the cyclone. An additive with large particles (6) is fed through the outlet into the gas as it is treated. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) reducing gas flow through a cyclone comprising adding an additive with large particles to the gas to unblock the gas outlet; and (ii) an apparatus for the above process, comprising an inlet for the additive with large particles connected to the gas outlet or cyclone.
