The chemical preservation of magnesium and its alloys comprises degreasing, followed by alkaline cleaning, and chemical conversion by a bath of aqueous solution of permanganate of an alkali metal and of a phosphate of an alkali metal, with intermediate rinsing operations using water. Drying is followed by storage of product. The pH 2-5 conversion bath is set by an inorganic acid applied at a temperature of 20-40 degrees.
