A method for characterizing an analyte, which method comprises: (a) providing a compound in which the analyte is bound by an agent cleavable binding an indicator capable of identifying the analyte group consisting reporter group on a mass label detectable by mass spectrometry, said compound of the following formula: ** (formula) ** wherein R represents the group indicator and rd represents analyte, or the analyte and R represents rd represents the reporter group, and n is 1 or 2; (B) segmentation indicator analyte group; and (c) identifying the reporter group, thus characterizing the analyte.
