The invention relates to a process for separating at least one benzothiophene compound of a hydrocarbon mixture, for example, a gasoil, consisting of: (a) contacting said mixture or a fraction thereof with a reagent comprising a complexing agent {pi} acceptor to obtain a donor-acceptor complexing agent between the acceptor and the said benzothiophene compound complex; (B) separating said complex from said mixture, or said fraction to obtain an impoverished or purified fraction of said benzothiophene compound.
