-30-Compositions derived from a novel viralisolate designated feline T-lymphotropic lentivirus(FTLV) include the whole virus; proteins, polypeptidesand, polynucleotide sequences derived from the virus;and antibodies to antigenic sites on the virus. Thesecompositions are useful in a variety of techniques forthe detection of and vaccination against FTLV.Detection methods disclosed include immunoassays forboth the virus and antibodies to the virus, and the useof polynucleotide probes to detect the viral genome.Vaccines include both wholly and partially inactivatedviruses and subunit vaccines.. Whole, live virus isalso useful as a model system for predicting thebehavior of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
