The present invention relates to a stably co-transfected eukaryotic cell linecapable of expressing a GABA Areceptor, particularly a human GABA A receptor, which receptor comprises atleast one alpha, one beta and one gammasubunit; to the cloning of novel cDNA sequences encoding the a2, a3, a5, a6and .beta.2 subunits of the human GABA Areceptor; and to the use of the cell line in designing and developing GABA Areceptor subtype-selective medicaments.
