The present invention discloses intersexual heterozygous Phycomyces strains.These strains show an improved .beta.-caroteneproductivity and an increased stability when compared with both the wild typeand heterokaryotic Phycomyces strains. The pres-ent invention also disclosed a method for obtaining Phycomyces transformantswithout using selection markers. Furthermore, aprocess is provided for producing .beta.-carotene comprising the use ofintersexual heterozygous Phycomyces strains in a submergedculture.
