POSITIONING APPARATUS USED IN A CELLULAR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND CAPABLE OF CARRYING OUT A POSITIONING WITH A HIGH ACCURACY IN URBAN AREA

A positioning apparatus is provided in a cellularbase station for positioning a portable terminal in a cellcovered by the cellular base station. The positioningapparatus has a base position indicative of a position ofthe cellular base station on a map. The positioningapparatus comprises an array antenna for receiving atransmission signal transmitted by the portable terminal tooutput a plurality of reception signals. A receiversection translates the reception signals into a pluralityof baseband signals to demodulate the baseband signals intoa plurality of demodulated signals. An estimation sectionestimates incident direction and delay time of thetransmission signal on the basis of the demodulated signalsto output an estimation result indicative of the incidentdirection and the delay time. A position calculating meanscalculates a terminal position of the portable terminal onthe map in accordance with the estimation result and thebase position to output a terminal position signalindicative of the terminal position.
