A method is disclosed for characterising the subsurface levels of the Earthwith a greater degree of accuracy than hitherto. Seismic data samples aremigrated and stacked, for example according to known techniques and thenspectrum analysed. The spectral analysis is applied to a feature of thesubsurface and, for example, a particular layer bounded by a pair of horizonswould be subject to volume reflection spectral analysis. The analysis iscarried out using an orthogonal base by defining the reflection signals interms of coefficients to a set of orthogonal polynomials. Additional seismiccharacteristics or attributes may be directly calculated from the polynomialcoefficients. These coefficients represent the characteristics of the layer toa high degree of accuracy and may be compared with spectra derived a priori(for example synthetic spectra or previously characterised spectra) to furtherassist in analysis of measured seismic data.
