UNIFIED ACCESS PLATFORM DISTRIBUTING ATM CELLS AND TELEPHONY SIGNALS TO SUBSCRIBER PREMISES OVER TWISTED WIRE PAIRS

A Unified Access Platform capable of providing telephone and highspeed data services in a number of different local loopconfigurations. In a first, embodiment, a broadband digitalterminal (BDT) receives high speed data and telephony signals, andcombines them into a cell based signal which is transported to anaccess multiplexor. At the access multiplexor, a first linecardgenerates an analog telephone signal, and a second linecardgenerate; a high-speed data signal. Analog telephone service isprovided over a first twisted wire pair drop cable, while the highspeed data service is provided over a second twisted wire pairdrop cable. In an alternate embodiment, the BDT's cell basedsignal is transported to two separate terminals. Analog telephoneservice is provided to a subscriber location from the firstterminal, while high speed data service is provided to a secondsubscriber location from the second terminal. Yet anotherembodiment provides analog telephone and high speed data servicesfrom a single linecard located in an access multiplexor. Theanalog telephone and high speed data signals are generated on thelinecard and combined using a diplexor. At the residence, areceiving diplexor is used to separate the combine signal. Stillanother embodiment generates a high speed data signal at an accessmultiplexor which contains a digital representation of the analogtelephones signal. The high speed data signal is sent to theresidence, where a receiving device generates an analog telephonysignal and transmits the high speed data signal to appropriateterminal equipment.
