A grinding millliner (18) having inwardand outward layers. Theoutward layer is formedof a relatively soft,shock-absorbent materialand the inward layer isformed of a relativelyhard, impact and abrasionresistant material. Aplurality of magnets (38)are embedded in the inwardlayer. A pair of pole pieces(44, 46) are positionedon opposed sides of eachmagnet and embedded inthe inward layer. The polepieces extend above themagnet, protecting it fromthe impact forces to whichthe liner is subjected duringoperation of the grindingmill. The pole pieces alsofocus the magnetic fieldforces emanating from themagnet. The magnets are arranged in rows (40, 42, 45), with adjacent poles ofadjacent pairs of magnets within each row having alternatepolarity; and, with adjacent poles of adjacent pairs of magnets in adjacentpairs of the rows having alternate polarity. The rows are parallelto one another and extend transversely to the direction (48) in which materialflows across the liner during operation of the grindingmill. The liner is made up of a number of circumferentially adjoining sections(20). Each section slopes upwardly from a longitudinallyextending rearward face (26) toward a longitudinally extending forward face(24). The respective faces of each section extend transverselyto the direction in which material flows across the liner. Each section may bea separate tile. The tiles are removably and interlockablyattached to the grinding mill's drum to form the liner.
