A drainage system is provided for a syntheticgrass turf assembly having a flexible and water permeablesheet backing for installation on a supporting soilsubstrate to provide a game playing surface. The drainingsystem of the present invention prevents water fromaccumulating on the turf surface, which could cause thetop-dressing layer to "float" and be moved by inundation.The draining system of the present invention includes aspacing grid disposed between the backing of the turf and aporous aggregate layer over the supporting soil substrate.The spacing grid is structured to permit water not only tobe drained vertically through the spacing grid into theporous aggregate layer, but also to be drained horizontallythrough the spacing grid to the edges of the field whenwater is accumulated in the porous aggregate layer beneaththe spacing grid and cannot be drained away promptly. Thespacing grid is made from one or more types of geotextileor plastics material with an adequate flexibility toimprove the impact absorption capabilities and resilienceof the synthetic grass turf assembly.
