A thermal barrier coating material, characterized in that it comprises a met al binder layer (22) and a porous ceramic layer (23) comprising a partially stabilized ZrO2which are laminated on a base material (2) in this order, and the ceramic layer has microcracks (24) extending in the thickness direction; and a method for producing the thermal barrier coating material which comprises, after the lamination of the ceramic layer, heating the front surface of the ceramic layer by the irradiation with a laser beam while cooling the back face of the base material, to thereby form the microcraks. Another thermal barrier coating material, characterized in that it comprises a metal binder layer and, laminated thereon, a partially stabilized ZrO2 which is partially stabilized by the addition of Dy2O2 and Yb2O2. A thermal spray material for TBC, characterized in that it comprises a zirconia powder and a rare earth oxide powder added thereto, both having a specific surface area o f 10 m2/g; and a method for producing the thermal spray material which compris es mixing these powders and a binder to form a slurry, granulating the slurry, and heat-treating the resultant granules.
