INTRAMEDULLARY HIP NAIL WITH BIFURCATED LOCK

The intramedullary nail system includes an intramedullary nail (19) forinsertion in the femur. The nail has an axial bore (31, 32, 34) and anintersecting transverse bore (33). A lag screw (49) is inserted through thetransverse bore and turned into the head of the femur. A slotted sleeve (3) isinserted over the lag screw and through the transverse bore with the slots (9)aligned with the axial bore. A sleeve lock (2) is inserted into the axial boreand has a locking tab which engages the slots in the sleeve preventingrotational and longitudinal movement between the sleeve and the nail. Acompression screw (6) is turned into the trailing end of the lag screw andengages the encircling sleeve to provide longitudinal translation between thelag screw and sleeve to apply compressive force across a fracture.
