COMPRESSION METHOD FOR AVIATION WEATHER PRODUCTS

An imagery compression algorithm (Fig.2) is disclosed for transmitting imagerydata to an aircraft over a relatively narrow bandwidth channel. The imagerydata is first trimmed (60) to include only images required by the aircraftduring flight. The image is also decluttered by removing geographical boundarylines (62) and isolated pixels that likely do not represent relevant weatherimagery data. The compression scheme provides a plurality of instructions forcompressing the image data. The first instruction depicts the number ofmultiple image lines that contains no imagery data, i.e., they indicate onlythe background display color. Two instructions identify short background colorsegments and long background segments, wherein the division between short andlong segments is a predetermined value. Each of the data or color pixels isindividually encoded with a fourth instructions characterizing the number ofsuccessive data pixels followed by a bit sequence indicating the color of eachindividual data pixel.
