An approach for supporting telephony services for use over a data network thatincludes at least one of the Internet (119) and a private Intranet isdisclosed. A communication system includes a switch (113) that is coupled to atelephone network (109) and is configured to determine presence of a dialingprefix of a call. The system also includes a gateway (115) that is coupled tothe data network and configured to communicate with the switch. The switchselectively routes the call based upon the presence of the dialing prefix tothe gateway (115).
