The invention relates to a method, which allows bits (a, b, c, d) that are to be transmitted during frequency multiplex transmission methods, e.g. OFDM to be assigned to the subcarriers (f1, f2, f3) (known as bit loading), the total number of the bits that have been assigned to all the carriers corresponding to a whole number multiple of a word length (BL) used in the system. According to the invention, in a first step, e.g. in accordance with the SNR of each subcarrier, a corresponding number of bits is assigned to said carrier. Then in a second step, bits are removed from or added to carriers until the total number corresponds to a multiple of the word length used. Said method can be used for example in DSL transmission systems.
