The aim of the invention is to optimise channel estimation in order to increase the data transfer rate in an OFDM-based mobile telephony system. To this end, data signals comprising information symbols and at least one pilot symbol are received via the radio channel and the radio channel is estimated on the basis of the at least one pilot symbol. A receiver measures a state variable, especially the signal/interference ratio, the coherence time and/or the coherence bandwidth, of the radio channel and transmits a corresponding state value to the emitter. Said emitter varies the number of pilot symbols to be transmitted in one burst and adapts it to the modification speed of the radio channel.
