A circular image (A1) of an object coin (A0) to be checked is picked up by a CCD sensor unit (11) and deformed into a rectangular image (B1) by deforming means (142). The rectangular image (B1) is compared to a rectangular image (B) of a master coin (A) as a judgment reference stored in a master image memory (148) by comparing means (144). Unless the rectangular images (B1 and B) are matched, a part of the rectangular image (B1) of the object coin to be checked is moved from one end to the other end by positioning means (143) and shift conversion is performed to generate a new rectangular image, which is then compared. When matched, it is decided that the object coin (A0) is authentic. When none of the rectangular images of the object coin is matched with the rectangular image (B) in the master image memory (148), it is decided that the object coin (A0) is a false coin.
